The Pnyx

Throughout the ages, the Pnyx has played an important role in society. In prehistoric times it served as a place of worship, with people gathering here to pray to the gods. Fast forward to 507BC, it was also here that the Athenians held a public assembly practicing free speech and rights. Take a look at the raised platform, it was from here that people would share and discuss their thoughts and ideas. The discussions that went on here led to the transfer of power to the people after the abolition of the royal family. One of the earliest examples of democracy, and a blueprint that all modern Europeans governments have shaped themselves around.
