The Great Market Hall

The Great Market Hall is located on Fővám Square at the end of Váci Street, the famous pedestrian shopping street and next to Corvinus University of Budapest. It’s the neo-gothic entrance gate and the colourful Zsolnay tiling of the roof make this huge building truly outstanding. It’s the largest and oldest indoor market in Budapest. The building was designed and built by Samu Pecz. The market opened its gates in 1897, and back then the fresh products arrived via the canal in the middle. While there’s no canal today, the market, which is always overwhelmed by the smell of paprika powder is still famous for its fresh products and other special Hungarian delicacies. You’ll find fresh fruits and vegetables, quality meat products, cheese and wines on the ground floor, handicrafts and souvenirs on the second floor. Here you get to buy the famous paprika powder, the most traditional gift from Hungary.
