National Garden

Formerly known as the Royal Gardens this place is all that regal, and the perfect place for a date. Sitting next to Syntagma Square, the garden also encloses some ruins and mosaics, so its fun to do a historical scavenger hunt. The Garden was commissioned by Queen Amalia, the wife of King Otto, in 1840. The Upper part of the garden was actually fenced off for the royals, but the rest of the garden was open to the public in the afternoons. The current entrance of the park is where Queen Amalia planted 12 palm trees, making for a beautiful welcome to what Henry Miller once described as, “the quintessence of a park, the thing one feels sometimes in looking at a canvas or dreaming of a place one would like to be in and never finds”.
