Mural of Szondy György

This art nouveau style mosaic is one of the most intricately crafted, interesting and aesthetic pieces of street art in Budapest. It depicts the story of Szondy György, a legendary Hungarian soldier and the captain of Drégely Castle located on the Slovakian border in Northern Hungary. György’s legendary status comes from the battles he fought defending the Hungarians against the Ottomans. He died when the castle was besieged by the Ottomans, yet his bravery was so notable that Ottomon leader Hadim Ali Pasha commanded that he be buried in an ornamental marble sarcophagus and honored as a venerated foe. Detailed, stunning and steeped in history.
