Man of the Year Mural
Take a short trip over to Wesselenyi street to learn from the walls. High above the street looms an enormous replication of Boris Chaliapin’s famous Time Magazine cover that honors the “Hungarian Freedom Fighters” of 1956 as Man of the Year. That’s right, in 1956 there was no singular “Man of the Year”. Instead the award was bequeathed to all of the brave Hungarian rebels who fought against the Soviets for freedom. This revolt was brutally quashed by the Soviets, and ever since, the Hungarian freedom fighter has been used as a symbol of liberty in the face of communist oppression. This mural is a straight replica, and that is all the better, for the original is a breathtaking work of art.
