Caelum is tucked away down one of the tapered walkways in Barcelona’s Barri Gòtic, historically the city’s Jewish Quarter. Take a step inside and you’ll be mesmerised by the marvellous medieval architecture, which creates a vibe of mystery and romanticism. The first floor has the store and seating, but in the basement are the remnants of the Jewish Quarter’s female public baths, known as the mikveh. Its name in Latin is heaven, which is quite fitting as all the treats you see are the creation of nuns from across Europe. The shop itself has no association with religion, but the wide variety of cakes, pastries and sweets will make you feel like you’ve walked through the pearly gates. I always get a chai latte, accompanied by a cake or some egg yolk candy when I pop down. A real treat
